"You're too
small."
"But, I could get bigger," said Harold.
"Well, that's true," said his sister.

And Harold went to tell his mother.
"You can't be an astronaut," his mother said. "You get
motion-sick."
"But, I could take medicine," said Harold.
"Well, that's true," said his mother.

And Harold went to tell his father.
"You can't be an astronaut," his father said. "Elephants
aren't astronauts."
"Why not?" asked Harold.
"I don't know," said his father, "but I've never heard of an
elephant in outer space before."
"Then, I could be the first," said Harold.
"Well, that's true," said his father.

"I'll go get started right away," Harold said and he went to
get his stuff.

First, he collected all the things he would need to take with
him: some books to read, some games to play, some food to eat, and a
blanket, in case he got sleepy. And he carried it all to his tree
house.

Then, he made his tree house into a space ship with paint on
the outside and a comfy chair on the inside and lots of cardboard
boxes with buttons and levers and things that go "ping" to make his
space ship go.

Next, Harold made his space suit out of aluminum foil and
cardboard and silver paint, with his white football helmet for his
head and a long, snakey hose to breathe through.

Now the tree house space ship was ready to blast off, so
Harold loaded all of his stuff and got inside, shut the door, buckled
his seat belt, and went.

Harold was busy exploring Mars when his friend Emma climbed
aboard.

"What are you doing?" asked Emma.
"I'm an astronaut," said Harold.
"Can I be an astronaut, too?" Emma asked.
"It's too late," said Harold, "we've already blasted off.
But, you can be a martian, if you want."
"OK," said Emma.
So, Harold made some antennae for Emma out of aluminum foil
and she put them on her head.

At first, Harold the Astronaut was afraid of Emma the Martian,
but they soon became friends and ate the food and read the books and
played the games together and came home in time for supper.

Today, when his father saw Harold playing in the yard, he
asked: "How's my little astronaut?"
But Harold said, "That was yesterday. Today, I'm going to be
a baseball player."

"Well, well," said Harold's father. "A baseball player today
and an astronaut yesterday. What will you be tomorrow, Harold?"

I think I'll be a cook," said Harold, "but, maybe I'll be
something else."

The End

This story was written by Kat Richardson click here to mail Kat.

Hello!!!
Hope you are all okay...I'm okay here, just very bored with revision!! Happy Thinking Day!
As promised here is the recipe for Chocolate Surprise Pudding - it's yummy!! You may need some adult help though as you have to use a hot oven and a hot kettle, so BE VERY CAREFUL!!

You will need:
3 oz (75g) self raising flour
1 oz (25g) cocoa powder
pinch of salt
4 oz (100g) butter or margarine
4 oz (100g) castor sugar
2 eggs
2-3 drops of vanilla essence (you don't have to use this if you don't want to)
1-2 tablespoons milk

For the sauce:
4 oz (100g) soft brown sugar
1 oz (25g) cocoa powder
1/2 pt hot water

What to do:

Find a 2 pint baking dish or pie dish, and butter the sides of it really well. Put it on a baking tray so that it is easier to take it out of the oven (mine also overflowed, so it stops the oven getting covered in chocolate too!!). Turn the oven on to warm up (375F, 190C, Gas Mark 5) and find a pair of oven gloves. Fill and switch on the kettle to boil.
Sift the flour, cocoa powder and salt onto a plate or into a bowl and put it to one side. Put the butter and sugar into a large mixing bowl and beat with a wooden spoon until the mixture is creamy.
Lightly beat the eggs and vanilla essence in a small bowl. Gradually beat the egg into the creamed mixture. Add a little of the flour with some of the egg to stop the mixture separating. Fold in the rest of the flour with a tablespoon and mix in just enough milk to make a soft consistency (what I would say was very thick soup!). Spoon the cake mixture into the buttered dish and spread it level.
Put the soft brown sugar and cocoa powder into a small bowl.Stir in the hot water (Please ask an adult to help) and mix well to make a chocolate sauce. Pour the sauce over the cake mixture in the baking dish.
Put the pudding into the warmed oven and bake for about 40 minutes.(Ask an adult to help you here too) The 'surprise' is that during baking the cake rises to the top and the sauce goes to the bottom. You have a chocolate pudding with its own yummy sauce. Serve it hot with cream, or ice cream (or both!!!!) - delicious!!!

There you go then, have a chocolate feast. You could also try putting in some orange peel and juice, or some mint or coffee essence to give the pudding another surprise! (please don't put all of that in at once though, as it would taste pretty foul!)
Anyway, I'd better go now because writing this recipe for you has made me feel a little peckish! Hope you enjoy trying this out, but whatever you do...ask for some help when you have to use a kettle and the oven - I did! I made my housemate Emma do the sauce and then made her put it in the oven and take it out - well, she had to earn her pudding after all!!! Bye for now, be good and keep smiling,

Tawny Owl xx :-)

Hello!
How is half term? I wish I had a half term!! I don't though which means that I am still hard at work. I am trying to persuade my housemates to pose for a photo so that I can show you what they look like, but they are very camera shy - hopefully by the time I see you at Easter I may have succeeded in capturing them on film. I'm also trying to take photos of my house but it doesn't stay tidy for long and you don't really want to see my washing do you???
Happy Thinking Day! I hope you will all be thinking about Brownies from different parts of the world this week, because I will. Anyway, I must dash as I have a very rumbly tum as I haven't eaten since lunch - my housemate and I have made a chocolate pudding and if it tastes yummy I might post the recipe on the website for you to try too...
Have a good week off school, and think of me working away here...I'll see you in about six weeks time. Prepare a 9 x 13 x 2 inch pan as follows. Invert the pan. Cut a
piece of aluminum foil long enough to cover the bottom and sides of
the pan. Place the foil over the inverted pan and fold down the
sides and corners just to shape. Remove the foil and turn the pan
right side up. Place the foil in the pan and press it gently into
place. With a pastry brush or crumpled wax paper coat the foil
thoroughly but lightly with vegetable shortening. Set aside.

2. Place 1/2 cup cold water in the large bowl of an electric mixer,
Sprinkle the gelatin over the surface of the water and set aside.

3. Place the sugar, corn syrup, salt and the other 1/2 cup water in a
heavy 1 1/2 quart or 2 quart saucepan over moderately low heat. Stir
until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture comes to a boil. Cover for

3 minutes to allow any sugar crystals on the sides of the saucepan to
dissolve. Uncover, raiser the heat to high, inset a candy thermometer,
and let the syrup boil without stirring until the temperature reaches 240
degrees. Do not overcook. Remove from the heat.

4. Beating constantly at medium speed, pour the syrup slowly into the
gelatin mixture. After all the syrup has been added, increase the speed
to high and beat for 15 minutes until the mixture is lukewarm, snowy
white, and the consistency of whipped marshmallow, adding the
vanilla a few minutes before the end of the beating. (During the beating,
occasionally scrape the bowl with a rubber spatula. The marshmallow
will thicken and become sticky--if the mixture crawls up on the beaters as
it thickens, carefully wipe it down with a rubber spatula.)

5. Pour the slightly warm and thick marshmallow mixture into the
prepared pan and, with your forefinger, scrape all the mixture off the
beaters. Smooth the top of the marshmallow.

6. Let stand uncovered at room temperature for 8 to 12 hours or
longer if it is more convenient.

7. Then sift or strain confectioners sugar generously onto a large
cutting board to cover a surface larger then your pan. Invert the
marshmallow over the sugared surface. Remove the pan and peel off
the foil. Strain confectioners sugar generously over the top of the
marshmallow.

8. To cut into even 1 inch strips use a ruler and toothpicks to mark it
every 1 inch.

9. Prepare a long, heavy, sharp knife by brushing the blade lightly
with vegetable shortening. Cutting down firmly with the full length of the
blade, cut the marshmallow into 1 inch strips. (After cutting the first
slice, just keep the blade sugared to keep it from sticking.)

10. Dip the cut sides of each strip into confectioners sugar to coat
them thoroughly--you should have enough excess sugar on the board
to do this.

11. Now cut each strip into 1 inch squares. (You may place three
strips together and cut through them all at once.) Roll the marshmallows in
the sugar to coat the remaining sides. Shake off excess sugar.

12. Store in a plastic box or any airtight container--or plastic bag.
Fondly remembering my kids as young teenagers coating the kitchen
with confectioners sugar and having a great time...

Mallow Fancies

3 ounces unsweetened chocolate --- real chocolate lovers go for top of the line, not bargain brand chocolate.
1 1/2 cups evaporated milk
3/4 cup sugar
Miniature marshmallows
1 1/2 cups Pecans, chopped very fine but not to powder

1. In a separate bowl, sift the flour, cocoa and salt together. Add to the mixture and beat until well combined. Pour the mixture into a greased and floured 9 by 13-inch glass baking dish. Place in the oven and bake for 35 minutes.

2. Make the frosting while the cake is baking. In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat together the butter, cocoa, powdered sugar and vanilla. Slowly add the milk. Set aside. Once cake is baked, remove pan from the oven. Spread the marshmallows on top of the cake and return the pan to the oven for 5 more minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and cool for a few minutes. Evenly apply the frosting. Allow this to stand about 2 hours before cutting into squares.

Note: If the marshmallows are too hot, the frosting will sink right through. type='text'>

British Heart Foundation, 26th January, 2001
6 Terrace Walk,
BATH,
Avon. BA1 1LN.

Dear Sir or Madam,

BHF - Jump Rope for Heart

I have much pleasure in enclosing a cheque for £314.55, which is 75% of the sponsorship raised for our Jump for Rope skipping event held on the 4th December, 2000. We had a really successful evening, and leading up to the event the Brownies really improved their skills and became enthusiastic skippers! They look forward to using the skipping ropes during Pack meetings and it’s a skill that has been introduced to many of them purely because of this event and the reasons for it. The "Teachers Manual" is an excellent resource and will be used in the future, so a few more healthy hearts we hope.

They felt a real sense of achievement when they had completed their skip, and as soon as they finished they gave out a huge excited cheer because they were so pleased with themselves! I know it is an occasion which will remain in all our memories for a long time.

In order I can ensure every Brownie, Guider and Helper who took part receive their badges, I would be grateful if you could forward 26 badges and 8 Certificates. Only Brown Owl raised over £50.00 (£96.00) and therefore a rucksack (or two!!) for the Unit would be very much welcomed and made good use of.

Finally, I would like to say that this joint venture seems to have worked extremely well.

Brown Owl :)
